Would you give anything?

May 23rd, 2009

VERY interesting story someone told at my WW meeting today. She has a friend that speaks 7 languages and she said to him, “I would give anything to learn a 2nd language.”

His response? “No, you wouldn’t. Because you would have done it by now.”

That was so inspirational!

Jogging

May 21st, 2009

A couple years ago, when I was last on WW, I had a goal to run a mile under 10 minutes on the treadmill. I hated the mile jog in high school because I always came in at 15 minutes. It was a stupid activity; just a way for teachers to teach gym class without having to do anything. There are ways to work on improving your time, but they never taught me that!

When I wanted to run under 10 minutes, I started with periods of running followed by walking and repeat. Each week, I would decrease the walking time and increase the running. I got it down to just above 9 minutes, if I remember correctly.

After I started going to the gym after having my baby, I wasn’t really interested in the treadmill. In fact, I made the excuse that I was too heavy to run, and procrastinated by saying that when I hit 220, I would do the mile again.

This morning, my weigh-in was 219.2. (Yay!)

I haven’t been going to the gym for a little more than a month. Somehow, I didn’t do it for one day and I found it hard to get back to it. It requires me to get up earlier in the morning and have everything I need for the day ready before I go to bed.

It’s already Thursday (can you believe it???) and Monday is a holiday. Would it be alright to use the weekend to get my act together for my return to the treadmill on Tuesday?

Speaking of this weekend, I have plans to work on my podcast. I let it fall to the wayside because of my vacation, but also because I hit a roadblock with finding a place to host it and provide an RSS feed for iTunes. My biggest fan, my husband, has been really looking into all this and thinks he has a solution. So if he can help me get that figured out, I’ll spend this weekend working on my podcast.

Water works!

May 19th, 2009

Huzzah, the return to the regular water intake has helped dropped the pounds again. While on vacation, it was difficult to keep up on the water like I do at the office. For a couple of nights, I had to take off my wedding ring because my fingers were getting swollen. Water retention! My body was telling me it wasn’t getting enough water, so it was going to hoard it.

While on vacation, it was difficult to get good-tasting water if not at a restaurant AND not have the burden of carrying a water bottle around.

Ah, well. Now I am back and drinking my water. And back to losing the weight!!

Back from Vacation

May 18th, 2009

Back to routine and schedule. Boo for life, yay for losing weight. I’ve learned that it is really, really hard to get points and keep track when eating at someone’s house and when eating out. I should have bought healthy snacks. But I did get a lot of exercise: walking and swimming.

When I returned to the scale this morning, I had lost a little more than half a pound. I was hoping to lose more in the past 10 days, but I am hoping that once I get my water intake back up, more weight will come off.

Alrighty, the last days of my vacation. Here’s what I ate this week:

Weekly Food - May 15, 2009

As you can see, I ate more. And it’s so much harder to keep track because when you eat out, menus don’t have nutritional information. If we’d gone to Denny’s or some other national chain, you can look it up online (check out www.dwlz.com!!), but Mom and Pop little restaurants don’t do that. So I guessed and tried to be as conservative as possible.

Here’s me!:

Yes, that’s my little girl sleeping the background. LOL

I am highly anticipating getting on the scale when I get home, but what will I do if I didn’t lose. Or worse, gained???!!!

At the whims of others

May 9th, 2009

This is the hardest weight loss scenario I’ve been in. And I can’t recall discussing it at any meetings: Staying as a guest at someone else’s house.

  1. Eating what they eat.
  2. When they eat it.
  3. Constant offers of food, at the meal and between meals.
  4. No lighter options available (ie fat-free, low-cal).

I didn’t realize these factors when I packed for our trip. Had I thought about it, I would have brought snacks for between meals. What else could I have done? Packed Italian dressing? So I am watching portions and kindly refusing offers for desserts and snacks. And I try to go on walks every so often.

And here is me:

I’m not seeing a difference this week.

Vacation is going well. My hosts offered pork sandwiches for lunch and there weren’t any light options available. But when we went out to dinner at a steakhouse, I ordered grilled shrimp and a salad bar run. Grilled shrimp is so low in points and so filling! I think I’m going to eat a lot of grilled seafood this vacation.

I also went on a couple of 20-minute walks. So far so good! :)

I was disappointed that my weigh-in showed “only” a weight loss of 0.4 pounds. But that meeting was about POSITIVE SELF-TALKING. Hey, I’ve lost 20 pounds so far and any loss is better than any gain. Right?

Vacation!!

May 7th, 2009

I am up super early this morning to get the family ready to leave! I want to take my scale with me!!! But I have my iPhone and my Tweets to keep me on track. I hit a new low on the scale this morning and when I get back, it’ll be even lower! Fruit for breakfast, salad for lunch, grilled for dinner, and walks with my daughter are in store for me! Keep watching!

Am I hungry?

May 6th, 2009

At work, I use a very slow software program. I have to close all my other programs so that it can hog as much memory as it wants. So I sit at my desk with nothing to do but stare out the window. And today, I immediately thought to get something to eat. And then I remembered this bit from my Weight Watchers book:

Maria, a real estate agent, had lunch with a client at 1 pm.

It’s 3 pm. She’s back in her office. She’s itching to eat some of the baked goods that a co-worker left in the office kitchen.

She asks herself: How hungry am I? She thinks about the signals her body is sending her and realizes that she’s not very hungry at all. In fact, her stomach feels satisfied. “Just right.” She then asks herself, “Why, then, am I tempted by the pastries in the kitchen?”

She realizes that she’s feeling bored and is looking for a distraction.

It was so true! I just wanted something to do and noshing is a yummy way to kill time. So I got off my rear end and chatted up co-workers while waiting for my program to load. You’d guess that “Think before you eat” should be such a natural thing, but for me, it’s an effort!
