I need help getting over my fear.

July 22nd, 2009

I just can’t get over this fear and my husband suggested I go more in depth on my blog.

I am scared of breaking 200.

Don’t ask me why because I don’t know why! Going from 245 to 200 was easier than going from 200 to 199. And because of that, I’ve been eating just enough extra to keep my scale hovering over 200. It’s the fear of the unknown, fear of losing who I am, and fear of failure.

I need something to make me do the final push. I have to do this for my daughter. And if I don’t find something to motivate me, even if I do the 5K once a week, I’ll just eat more to keep me overweight.

Can you suggest something? Money is very tight right now, so it can’t be “buy something”. Also, I know there are people that have made this leap. Please share your stories here. What helped you?

Rotini Salad

July 15th, 2009

I used whole grain rotini, cut out the cheese, and used Light Miracle Whip and 1% milk. That was 31 points for the entire salad and I was able to break that up into 4 good size portions. Next time I make this, I will use less Miracle Whip and mustard; they over-powered the other flavors!

Rainbow Rotini Salad

  • 2/3 (7 oz.) box Rainbow Rotini (pasta)
  • 1/2 cup celery, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup Tuna fish, drained
  • 1 small can peas (optional)
  • 1/4 cup diced cheese

Dressing:

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup Miracle Whip
  • 3 tsp. prepared mustard.
  • Mix together until smooth.
  • Cook rotini according to package directions; drain. Rinse with cold water several times; drain good.
  • Add celery, onion, Tuna fish, cheese, peas (optional) to drained and cooled rotini.
  • Mix dressing with ingredients. (Toss lightly so Rotini won’t break.) Some salt to taste, may be added. Makes 1 medium bowl salad.
  • It’s all uphill from here!

    July 15th, 2009

Today, I have reached the halfway mark between my starting weight of 246.2 and my goal of 160 pounds.

    Halfway There!

But it will be even harder to complete this last half.

First, I will not be burning calories as fast as I could when I first started. Did you know that the amount you burn is based on your weight? At the last WW meeting, a member made copies of a table that listed the “Energy Expenditure for Selected Physical Activities.” (I found a copy here: http://tinyurl.com/mcfl3x)

Let’s take running at 5MPH. The energy expenditure is 0.070 cals/min/lb. At 246.2 pounds, I could burn 344.68 calories if I ran for 20 minutes. But now that I am 203.1, I would only burn 284.34 calories in 20 minutes. When I hit 160 pounds, it would only be 224 calories.

To overcome this, I will exercise more.

Secondly, my eating habits are routine, and the body tends to plateau when the same thing happens over and over. Nature fights to keep things in an even keel and will fight to keep it that way.

To overcome this, I will shake things up with adjusting calorie intake and exercise.

And lastly, between July 15th and April 6th are the holidays. Cookies, turkey, and potlucks, oh my! There is so much to celebrate and I should be happy. I will be faced with potluck after potluck. I will plan parties and dinners. It will get colder and I will want filling foods.

To overcome this, I will remind myself that I am NOT on a diet, I am changing my LIFEstyle and that doesn’t take a break for the holidays. I will NOT go back to my previous weight for the sake of the short-lived pleasure of mac and cheese or a cookie.

With this post, I am acknowledging that my weight-loss journey will be a bit more hilly and that I am ready to take it on.

    Treadmill and Math!: Answer!

    July 10th, 2009

I started by running 6.0MPH for 3.5 minutes. Then I walked 3.5MPH for 1 minute. I repeated the running and walking intervals until I had gone 2 miles. After I completed two miles, my walking intervals were for a minute and a half; my running intervals were still for 3.5 minutes.

How long did it take me to do the 5k?

There is more than one way to figure this out. The easiest was to use Excel or other spreadsheet program like Google’s. Simply add up the times and distances until you got close to 3.12 miles, then do a little math to get the last bit.

    3.12

    34.74

    (.174167 miles)/1 * (1 hour)/(6.0 miles) * (60 minutes)/(1 hour)=1.74167 minutes OR 1 minute,44 seconds

TOTAL TIME: 34 minutes, 44 seconds

Here’s how to do it completely mathematically.

For the first 2 miles, I ran 6MPH for 3.5 minutes, and then walked 3.5MPH for one minute. For this problem, one “set” is one interval of running and walking. How many sets did I finish before hitting 2 miles? How long did it take?

    (6.0 miles/hour X 3.5 minutes X 1 hour/60 minutes) + (3.5 miles/hour X 1 minute X 1 hour/60 minutes) = .4083 miles

    .4083 miles X a < 2 miles

This is how many miles I ran/walked in each set.

Where a is the # of sets.

    Solving for a, I got a < 4.89.

I finished at least 4 sets before hitting 2 miles.

    .4083 miles X 4 = 1.63 miles

Now for the rest of the 3.12 miles. First, I ran 6MPH for 3.5 minutes, and then walked 3.5MPH for one and a half minutes. How many sets did I finish before hitting the end? How long did it take?

This is how many miles I ran/walked in each set.

    (6.0 miles/hour X 3.5 minutes X 1 hour/60 minutes) + (3.5 miles/1 hour X 1.5 minutes X 1 hour/60 minutes) = .4375miles

    .4375miles X a < (3.12-1.63) miles

Where a is the # of sets.

    Solving for a, I got a < 3.39.

I finished at least 3 sets before finishing the 5k.

    .4375 miles X 3 = 1.3125 miles

    3.5 minutes + 1.5 minutes) X 3 = 15 minutes

How many miles I do have left?

    (3.12 – 1.63 – 1.3125)miles = .17416 miles

Since I can run .35 miles during an interval of running, then this little bit was completed with just running. How long did that take?

    .17416 miles X 1 hour/6.0 miles X 60 minutes/1 hour = 1.7416 minutes OR 1 minute,44 seconds

    TOTAL TIME:

    (18 + 15 + 1.74) minutes = 34.74 minutes OR 34 minutes,44 seconds

This morning, I ran a 5k (3.12 miles) on the treadmill. I did really good! I alternated between running and walking.

I thought this would be a fun math problem! Yay for math!

    Upcoming Milestones

    July 7th, 2009

In three (3) pounds, I will have hit my halfway point to my goal. I will have lost 43.1 pounds and will have 43.1 pounds to go. When I have hit that milestone, I will post a portrait of me from January 2nd. This will be my “before” picture that I will add to my online profiles.

Some people find before pictures depressing or motivating. My before picture is depressing until I lose enough weight. Then I am just amazed at how far I have come. How about you?

At 50 pounds lost, I will tell my friends and family. They are pretty far away and don’t see me a lot.

I have a WW milestone to lose another 10% and that will be another 5 pounds past 50.

What milestone are you working toward?
