Losing weight history

April 22nd, 2009

I started Weight Watchers a few years ago. I was at 250 pounds and realized that that was too much! It took a couple of years, but I lost 40 pounds.

WW taught me something that I should have learned years ago: THINK before you eat!!! When I was a kid, my family just ate, without a thought. I just ate because things tasted good. I never gave a brain cell to ascertain if I was hungry or if the food I was eating was healthy. In fact, there is a story that I’ve told my husband a few times: One night, when I was in high school, the thought occurred to me that I didn’t have to eat a second plate of dinner if I wasn’t hungry. So I ate one plate of food and put my plate away. My mother accused me of starving myself!!

One Christmas, my dad bought the family memberships to the nearby gym and I was the only one who used them. However, it was a frustrating experience because I wasn’t eating right, so I was just coming out even in terms of weight. I joined a gym a couple years later, and again, it was another frustrating time.

It wasn’t until I learned to eat that I actually made some headway. And I started biking to and from work, 11 miles each way. When I moved, I gave my bike away, and haven’t found where I live to be bike-friendly on the roads at all!! Besides, I got pregnant and had my baby girl 7 months ago and haven’t gotten around to biking or buying a new bike.

But I did go to meetup.com and searched for “fitness”. There are so many local groups! Boot camps, walk and talk groups, and “fat girl” groups. Now that the weather is better, I am looking forward to getting out. This Saturday, my husband and I are taking the baby to a March of Dimes walk. 4.2 miles!
